Suzanne Lee has
travelled to over 20 countries in Europe and Asia on backpack in
the last 4 years of her full time photography career, documenting the
faces and people that she has met along the way. Her journey in
photography has spanned the vast variety of subjects that include
motorsport photography, fashion, and studio work, bringing her
to her current indulgences in documentary and travel photography, but
one element that has kept constant throughout is people interest.
Besides being nominated for 2 awards in year 2006, Suzanne and her
works have been featured in numerous online and print magazines, and
leading Malaysian newspapers such as The Star Daily Newspaper (2008), The Malay Mail Newspaper (2008), Advanced Images magazine (2004,
and again in 2008), Click! Magazine (2008), The Sun Daily Newspaper
(2006), The New Straits Times Daily (2006), and many more.
In November 2007, Suzanne was one of the 25 photographers
chosen out of over 700 applicants to attend the Angkor Photography
Festival VII workshop for young Asian photographers, where in 6 days,
each participant had to find a story, gain access to shoot it and
produce a photo story that would be shown to over 400
photographers who’ve travelled from around the globe to
Cambodia for the festival. The photo story would then be judged by a
panel of internationally acclaimed photographers and editors such as Paris-Match
Magazine representatives and Annie Boulat of Cosmos Agency, Paris, to
name a few. She came in a ‘close second’ in the
Paris-Match competition
for her moving photo story of a small community of impoverished blind
masseurs in their daily life and the painful death of a sick brother.
After her return from Cambodia, Suzanne photographed
the 3 week long International Festival of Indian Classical 'Odissi' Dance that was held in Kuala
Lumpur in
July 2008. She also exhibited large canvas prints of her work on Odissi dance in a month long exhibition that was
on display in the prestigious Petronas Gallery in the Petronas Twin
Towers, a prominent landmark of Malaysia. The group exhibition included
artists and photographers from Malaysia and India who have been
inspired by Odissi.
Shortly after the conclusion of the exhibition and festival, Suzanne finally answered a calling for her return to the land that so deeply inspired her in her first years of photography, and moved to India. She now works as a freelance documentary photographer in the region, with a base of New Delhi.
